Messy Bun

Thursday, 30 October 2014

Since cutting my hair quite a bit shorter, I have noticed that I can't just give it a good brushing & let it do it's thing. It seems to curl weirdly at the ends which means that I've gotten my straighteners out a lot more than usual. I don't want to have to use heat on my hair all the time, so I have been rocking a slightly messy bun for a few weeks now. It only takes a few minutes to create which is great for when I've slept in & am rushed for time. I literally throw it into a ponytail, then into a messy bun & pin any stray bits to make it look like a little more effort has gone in haha. My messy buns never look the same, sometimes better..mostly worse. It really is a 'throw it up & play with it until it look alright' type of style which is great for those 'off duty' casual days.

NOTD | Splat!

Tuesday, 28 October 2014

It's been a while since I have attempted a nail art look. I don't really paint my nails much but if I's pretty much been chipped to hell & back before I even bother taking it off. After having a quick nail art Google search, I came across pastel splatter nail art & fell in love but as it's Autumn, I decided to change the colours up a bit & go for more darker shades. The splatter nail art is super easy to do & didn't take long at all.

What I used:
Models Own Base & Top Coat.
Nails Inc - Porchester Square.
Barry M - Watermelon, Blackberry & Berry Cosmo.
How I achieved the splatter effect:
After I applied two thin coats of Porchester Square, I put a little drop of nail polish onto the nail & used the tip of the very sharp pencil to drag it out in every direction. I cleaned off any polish left on the nib & repeated with the other shades until each nail was complete.

There are many techniques to create splatter nail art, so have a quick google search & decide what would work best for you. I think this way is definitely the cleanest but I am very intrigued by the straw method. I am excited to try different colour & size combinations very soon.
What do you think of the splatter nail art? Will you be giving it a go?

The Purrrrrfect Bag

Saturday, 25 October 2014

I take a bag everywhere I go, if I don't there is always something I end up needing. I recently went shopping with my dad to help him pick a few Christmas gifts out, I left my bag at home which means I didn't have my purse but more specifically I didn't have my Boots advantage card, Costa coffee club card or my Superdrug Beautycard. Think of the points! D: I love a good backpack/rucksack, they sit comfortably on my shoulders which means I have my hands free to do whatever they need to do. I also find that they fit quite a lot more in than any of my other bags which may or may not be a good thing... I do tend to take a bunch of stuff I probably won't need but the 'just in case' thing happens. I not so recently picked up this gorgeous cat rucksack from Asda, it was about £12 & I just love everything about it from the stitched eye & whisker detailing to the furry ears & tummy to the little metal button nose. The straps are adjustable so I can always make sure it sits as comfortably as possible & it has a drawstring & magnetic clasp feature to make sure everything is safe in your bag at all times. There is also a little zip pocket inside for any super important/hard to find items.

What I love most about this bag is that because 99.9% of my outfits are pretty casual that the rucksack goes nicely with anything I chuck on which means I don't have to swap bags a lot. I am looking for a more smarter bag for special occasions, so if you have any recommendations please let me know in the comments below.
I got the rucksack from my local Asda store but I haven't been able to find it online. So, if you do want to get your hands on this incredibly roomy, comfortable bag of adorableness then hopefully they will have it in a store near you. If you're not a cat person then they also have a dog & owl version.

Mac Eyeshadow - Cranberry

Thursday, 23 October 2014

Cranberry is an eyeshadow that gets a fair amount of love, especially when Autumn comes around. I was pretty late to the party as I only got my hands on this last month but I absolutely adore it. I must admit when it arrived, I was pretty hesitant in using it as it does look quite intense & not a colour I would usually go for but I have been adding a bit of Woodwinked in to the crease/outer corner & it looks amazing.

Cranberry is a gorgeous metallic burgundy shade from the Frost range. In different lights its looks like it has more pink tones. The quality is fantastic! It is incredibly pigmented but super easy to build up or blend out depending on how intense you want it to look. The eyeshadow is buttery soft, gives an even pigmented layer with one sweep & there has been no fall out or creasing to be seen. As I have oily lids, so I don't tend to forget to use primer but when I did, I was pretty surprised to see that the eyeshadow was only slightly faded. Cranberry goes nicely with so many different eyeshadow shades from creating a super intense looks with dark smokey shades to creating subtle day looks with combining it with neutral shades. A combination I've been loving is Cranberry all over the lid with a tiny amount of Woodwinked in the crease. It is such a great look for Autumn & is super quick & easy to create.

How do you incorporate Cranberry into your makeup routine?

What I've Bought #20

Tuesday, 21 October 2014

As Christmas is slowly approaching, I haven't really bought much for myself. I always like to start my Christmas shopping fairly early because it just makes it a little less stressful. I have managed to pick up a few clothing items though, some were purchased months ago & a few a little more recently, so I thought I'd throw them all into one post.

Whenever I'm in Asda, I have to check out the clothes. I found the amazing Batman tshirt in the mens section while heading to the tills. It has all the Batman logos that has ever been used on it & the quality is really great.

Asos has been a little hit & miss with me for quite a while now but in August I came across this incredible unicorn tshirt & just needed it in my life. The print & colour choices are amazing, it fits really well & the quality is just incredible.

I recently had an interview & didn't feel confident in anything I had in my wardrobe, I decided to have a look on the New Look website & came across this beautiful tunic dress. I don't usually wear dresses, I don't really think I can pull them off but as soon as I put this on, I felt incredible. The quality is really good, it's quite thick so it kept me warm when I was outside & it has pockets which came in handy to keep important items safe.

I recently went to Primark with my boyfriend & his mum, I found so many things I loved but unfortunately they didn't have my size. So, I only left with two pairs of jeans, a pair of boots & a pair of flatforms. I love Primark jeans - they are super comfy, fit well & last a long time. I needed a pair of boots to go with my interview dress & I really loved the simple silver buckle & cut out detail. I have been obsessed with the flatforms, I am a sucker for anything leopard print & they are incredibly comfortable. The only problem I have with Primark is that I do have to size down when it comes to Primark shoes though, I'm usually an 8 but I tend to have to get a 6.

Primark Ankle Boots £15
Primark Leopard Print Flatforms £8
Primark Black Skinny Jeans x2 £7
Asos Unicorn Tshirt £16
George At Asda Batman Tshirt £8
New Look Check Print Tunic Dress £22.99

So, that's everything I have bought lately. I have a massive clothing wishlist at the moment so after my Christmas shopping is done, you may be seeing another clothing haul.

Have you bought any clothing bits & pieces lately?

Wishlist #30 - The Ebay Edit

Saturday, 18 October 2014

I spend a lot of time on Ebay trying to find amazing items to make my bedroom look a little nicer. I have found a few items that I adore & couldn't resist sharing them with you.

What is currently on your home decor wishlist?

Five Favouirte Things #3

Thursday, 16 October 2014

Nescafe Gingerbread Latte
I've never been one for seasonal drinks, I tend to stick to what I know I like but when I spotted these a little while ago, I couldn't resist. It is such a warm, comforting flavour which is perfect for cozy nights in while it's cold outside. I mix a dash of milk with the power before adding the hot water & two sugars. It isn't too strong & while the ginger gives a warming kick, it isn't overpowering. I'm so glad I picked them up, I kinda wish I got more than one box though as they have become great little cold morning pick-me-ups.

Yankee Candle Wax Tarts
I become much more of a candle enthusiast when the colder weather comes around. There is nothing better than putting on your favourite pjs, snuggling on the sofa with a hot drink & a beautifully scented wax tart melting away. My favourite scents are Strawberry Buttercream, Salted Caramel & Peppermint Bark. I find that the wax tarts give off a stronger scent than a candle. They are also really easy to change - once the wax tart has solidified, I flip the dish upside down, give it a little tap & it pops out, so you can start a different one in & put the previous one away for another time!

Avatar: The Last Airbender
This is such a great series. The artwork is fantastic, the characters develop nicely throughout, there is plenty of humour, cultural referances, a good dose of sarcasm & well, who doesn't love Appa & Momo?! I also really like that people can manipulate the elements by using different forms of Chinese martial arts to bend them to their will & that there is someone who could master all four elements to basically bring world peace. Overall, it is a great series for children & adults alike.

Rabbit Ring Holder
I have seen a lot of people talking about this little beauty lately & I just had to have it. My local Home Bargains didn't have them for a while but when I went in a few weeks ago, there was a few left. At £2 it was a bargain! It looks lovely sitting on my makeup storage & holds all my rings nicely.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
This is a game that I've not only been enjoying playing alone but it's also super fun to play with other people. You are a hunter who completes quests to fight larger than life monsters. They all have different attacks, locations & specific weaknesses/strengths. With the rewards from capturing/killing the monster you can create incredible armour/weapons & equipment to make the fight easier. The more monsters you defeat, there will be more amour/weapon options. I personally like the Azure Rathalos armour & the Duel Blades. What I like most about this game is that you have to gather ingredients yourself to make the items you want, there are shops available but they may not have the specific item you want. Also, the shakalaka's are adorable & quite helpful when it comes to battles.

So, those are my Five Favourite Things. What have you been loving lately?

Sleek Contour Kit - Light & Blush - Suede

Tuesday, 14 October 2014

L-R: Contour, Highlighter & Blush swatch.

Sleek is a brand that I haven't really tried much of, I hear nothing but great things but when I see a product I want to try..there always seems to be something else that needs to be bought first. I recently added two products to my collection, one from a blogsale & the other I won. I have been reaching for them more than anything else at the moment, so I thought I'd share my thoughts.

The Contour Kit contains a matte contour powder & a shimmery pearl highlighter. Both powders are finely milled & incredibly pigmented, so you only need to use the tiniest amount. For the contour shade, I gently dab my Real Techniques contour brush into the pan & sweep it into the hollows of my cheeks & under my jaw to slim down my face & add a bit of extra definition. When applied with a light hand it creates a very natural looking shadow but if over applied it can look a little 'dirty'. To apply the highlighter, I use the Real Techniques Setting Brush & take it down the bridge of my nose, across my cheekbones & dust any excess onto my cupids bow. It creates a gorgeous ‘lit from within’ type glow without being too shimmery. I find that I can get an amazing 7-8 hour wear from both powders before noticing any fading.

All in all, even though you have to be quite cautious of how much contour powder you apply, I definitely recommend it. The quality is incredible - both of the powders blend well, have great pigmentation & the compact is great for travel as it also contains a large mirror so it's great for touch ups on the go.

The blush is a matte powder that looks more like a medium brown in the pan but when swatched it has more orange tones. The blush is a little less pigmented than other Sleek products but because of this, I don't have to worry about being light handed & it is a great option for 'no makeup, makeup days' or on days where you are going for a bold lip/eyes but want everything else toned down. The blush is finely milled & blends really well. I found that I can get around 4 hour wear time before it starts to fade.

All in all, I really like this blush. It hasn't got a intense pigmentation but that does make it perfect for anyone who likes more of a subtle blush. As it doesn't contain any shimmer, it won't draw attention to any problem areas like some shimmer based products can.

What are your favourite Sleek products?

The Flawless Base

Saturday, 11 October 2014

I am always after flawless skin, I doubt I'll ever get that naturally so finding products & tools that create a natural yet flawless base has been a dream come true.

Mixing It Up:
I wanted the lightness of a BB Cream but the coverage of a foundation, so I decided to mix the Rimmel Matte BB Cream with the Wake Me Up Foundation. When mixed together it gives the skin excellent coverage & a glowy finish while feeling super lightweight. I also find that it has a better consistency, so it blends like an absolute dream.

Correct & Conceal:
Possibly my favourite combination of products right here. The Bobbi Brown Corrector corrects my crazy dark circles & sets into a slightly tacky finish which gives my concealer something to stick to. Then I've been switching between the Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer & the Nars Radiant Cream Concealer. These both give excellent coverage, blend really well & brighten up the eye area beautifully.

Blend, Blend, Blend!
The tool that I have been using to blend my foundation, corrector & concealer is the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. I use the pointed tip to blend corrector/concealer under my eyes & the rounded sides of the sponge to dab on my foundation. I like to use this both dry & damp depending on how much coverage I want. It really does give a super flawless finish to the skin when used to blend in cream/liquid products.

So that's how I have been achieving a flawless base at the moment. It also really helps to have a great skincare routine to ensure any makeup that you apply looks as amazing as it possibly can. Another thing to help makeup look great is to make sure you allow each product to properly sink in. I used to make the mistake of applying products one after the other without giving them time to sink in [usually when I've been rushed for time], so they never looked as great as they could but I also noticed that my foundation never really set properly.

What products/tools do you use to create a flawless base?

NOTD | Matte Pastel Confetti

Thursday, 9 October 2014

Even though it's autumn, I'm still enjoying the pastel shades. I decided on a L'Oreal combo - Nouvelle Vague Nail Polish & Confetti Top Coat. I wasn't a fan of how glossy it looked, so I decided to use my favourite matte top coat - Rimmel Lycra Pro Matte Finish Top Coat. I'm pretty sure it's been discontinued which is a shame but if you know a great affordable matte top coat, please leave a comment below. I find that with the Confetti Top Coat, less  is more & I'm not a fan of each nail looking the same. I quickly sweep the brush across the nail & dab the brush on to the nail if needed.

Today's Face - Cranberry Eyes

Tuesday, 7 October 2014

After purchasing Cranberry I have been trying to think of ways I could incorporate it into my makeup routine without straying to far out of my comfort zone. I came up with a look that not only screams Autumn to me but makes Cranberry a little more wearable.

I patted Cranberry all over the lid & sightly blended out the edges with the Real Techniques Base Shadow Brush & then worked a tiny bit of Woodwinked into the crease with the Mua E3 Blending and Shadow Brush. A teeny amount of liner, lashings of mascara & I kept the rest of my face pretty natural.

Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Fatigue Blur Primer

The Autumn Tag

Saturday, 4 October 2014

I did Georgina's Autumn Tag last year & really enjoyed it, so I could resist doing this years version. For me, Autumn is the best season & something about it makes me super happy.

1.  Ok we're talking coffee's - what's your favourite seasonal drink from Starbucks/Costa/Cafe Nero etc?
I recently tried Gingerbread Latte & it was delicious but it wasn't from a coffee shop, so if I was getting a drink from Starbucks/Costa it would be any caramel flavoured iced coffee type drink.

2.  Accessories - what do you opt for, scarf, boots, gloves?
I'm gonna have to go with boots. I love scarfs & gloves but I get so warm super quick so they get uncomfortable after a while.

3.  Music - what's your favourite music to listen to during Autumn?
I don't have a particular song or band but I'm currently loving Maroon 5 - Maps, Creed - My Sacrifice & Paramore - For A Pessimist, I'm Pretty Optimistic.

4.  Perfume - what's your favourite scent for this time of year?
I don't usually have a certain scent but I have noticed that I'm reaching for Katy Perry - Killer Queen more than anything else at the moment.
5.  Candles - what scents will you be burning this season?
I generally burn wax tarts & I'm really loving the Salted Caramel one by Yankee Candle. It is heavenly.
6.  What do you love most about Autumn?
  • Colourful & Crunchy leaves.
  • Wrapping up all warm & cozy.
  •  My boyfriends mums homemade stew with crusty bread *drools*
  •  How cold it gets. Aswell as getting super hot, I get insanely cold - It is the perfect excuse to take my duvet to the sofa & snuggle up to my boyfriend. I have a few blankets near the sofa for this reason but I do love my duvet.

7.  Favourite makeup look?
I change up the majority of my makeup everyday but I have recently came across an amazing eye look. I have been using Mac Cranberry all over the lid & woodwinked in the crease/outer corner. It just screams Autumn to me.
8.  What are you looking forward to most in Autumn?
Lots of hot drinks, cozy snuggles in my onsie with the boyfriend, seeing my nephews & niece in the cutest, coziest outfits & homemade stew with extra dumplings.

What are your favourite things about Autumn?

Blog Name Change & New Header

Thursday, 2 October 2014

It was time for a change. My blog name, Rambles Of A Beauty Addict just didn't seem to fit my blog anymore, I want my blog to have a variety of content, not just beauty posts. So I brainstormed for a few days & decided on Violet Dreams. To go with my new blog name, I needed a new header. So I asked the lovely Millie to make me a new one as she did such a fab job on the original.

What do you think of my new blog name?
